The Home was opened in 1894 and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Benevolent Association. In 1909 a tragic fire destroyed part of the orphanage; it continued to operate at a reduced scale until 1922.

On the left can be seen the lower floors of the Heritage Tower, and in the background the Battle Creek Tower, also known as the Central National Tower. Both towers were built in 1931.
