Grassland, savanna, and pine barren were common in portions of Michigan's Lower Peninsula before settlement by Europeans. Native grassland and savanna communities, found primarily in southern Lower Michigan, have been largely converted to agricultural land and human developments. Effective fire suppression since the 1930s allowed most pine barrens of the northern Lower Peninsula to develop into dense forest cover. Loss of herbaceous openlands in Lower Michigan has resulted in decline or extirpation of wildlife species dependent on these landscapes. Prescribed burning is the management technique often preferred by natural resource professionals when maintaining grasslands. Furthermore, grasslands are actually fire-adapted communities, and periodic burning is essential for long-term health. However, grasslands provide little cover to early nesting birds after a spring burn; thus short term wildlife production values must be weighed against long-term grassland health when considering a prescribed burn. Two to three years after a burn, detritus cover within the West Unit of the study area had returned to nearly 100%, similar to an unburned field. Therefore, examination of detritus accumulation coupled with establishment of new woody stems should be used as a quick reference to the need for a prescribed bum at this clay lake plain management area.
