Wetland habitats in the United States currently are lost at a rate of 260,000 acres per year. To assist the DNR in creating, restoring, and enhancing Michigan wetlands, a terracing machine was used for the first time in the state. The machine purchased by Ducks Unlimited can be used to construct shallow water impoundments and improve wetlands. To demonstrate the machine capabilities, terraces were constructed at Maple River State Game Area. Within this report, there is a detailed description of the project, complete with pictures and diagrams, and ending with a discussion of the viability of use for the terracing machine.

The purpose of this paper is to review the history of Michigan prairie grouse, discuss recent sharp-tailed grouse population trends and monitoring, identity primary variables impacting habitat, and discuss management implications for sharptails and other open-land wildlife species. Due to research, it is felt that sharp-tailed grouse populations will continue to decline in Michigan due primarily to expanding and maturing forest coverage. Although Upper Michigan's landscapes have an inherent capacity to grow trees, strategic and multi-purpose planning may be used to maintain habitat for sharp-tailed grouse. Future sharp-tailed grouse numbers in Michigan will be only a remnant of the populations experienced in 1950, but management can help assure a sustainable population in the face of some very challenging landscape trends.
