Black and white photograph of Lake Idlewild at Idlewild, Michigan. Idlewild was one of the most popular vacation destinations in Michigan during the first half of the Twentieth Century. It was also one of the only vacation spots in the United States where African-Americans were allowed to purchase property and vacation until such discriminatory practices were abolished in the 1960s, and was known as the "Black Eden."

A Mitchell's Satyr marked Jackson County as part of a mark-and-recapture program. The adult butterflies are caught, marked with a number on a wing with a fine-tipped felt pen and released. The number of times the marked butterflies are recaptured compared to the overall number of specimens captured gives biologists an idea about the size of the population.

Their long legs help them negotiate through deep snow, and their heavy coats to withstand cold temperatures.
