The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) monitors northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) distribution and relative abundance using whistling surveys and hunter harvest and effort surveys. The whistling survey is the primary index used by the DNR to monitor the status of quail in Michigan. This report summarizes results of the 1999 quail whistling surveys. Additionally, this report discusses results of the 1998 hunter harvest surveys and current regulations. A total of 31 quail whistling surveys were completed in 1999. The overall mean index in 1999 of 5.5 quail heard per route was statistically not different from the index of 5.7 heard in 1998. However, most of the routes showed a decrease in quail heard since 1998. Results indicate that about 5,600 persons spent 26,850 days hunting quail in 1998. This is about 42% fewer hunters than in 1993, the last year in which a quail season was held. Estimates were not available on hunter harvest.

In 1995, 35 routes were conducted as compared to 32 routes in 1994. Additional routes were completed but not used in this analysis. Results show that only four counties meet the minimum criteria for having an open season. Since the first quail season in 1961, at least nine counties must meet the minimum criteria to open quail hunting. The quail index decreased eight percent from last year. Ice storms and low temperatures of last winter kept quail numbers at a low level throughout the quail range. The whistling index (average number of calls per stop) was 55 percent lower than 1992.

This report summarizes results of the 2000 quail whistling surveys and discusses current regulations. A total of 28 quail whistling surveys were completed in 2000. The overall mean index was 7.9 quail heard per route. In 1999 the overall mean index was 5.5 quail heard per route. However, comparison of 25 similar routes in 1999 and 2000 revealed no significant statistical differences.

During early June 1993, breeding quail surveys were conducted by personnel from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division. These surveys were conducted in 34 counties in the traditional quail range. Results showed a stable population in statewide quail numbers. However, on a county by county basis, numbers varied somewhat from 1992 figures. There appears to be a slight rebound in quail numbers in the western portion of the range and a slight to moderate decline in counties with traditionally high quail numbers.

Quail whistling counts were conducted on 33 routes during the last two weeks of June of 1980. The recent mild winter had raised hopes for a turnaround in the downward population trend of the past five years. Results of the survey indicate at least a modest recovery may be underway. Overall counts increased by 61 percent over 1979, but numbers are still tallied less than two quail. Notable gains were recorded in Hillsdale, Jackson, St. Clair, Tuscola, and Washtenaw counties. These would have all qualified for an open season under the guideline of 10 quail per route.
