Letter from Leonard G. Loomis to Elizabeth Abbott dated November 1, 1863. In this letter, he describes his trip from Columbus (Ohio) to Cairo (Ill.) which includes a negative review of Queen City (Ohio) and a railroad accident.

Black and white postcard from approximately 1907 depicting the Ross Bros. Mill, Electric Light Plant and Water Works in Beaverton, Michigan. The Ross Bros. Mill - a "sapless paving block mill", was established in 1890, and was located at the convergence of the Tobacco River and the Cedar River/ It was this mill that marked the founding of the town, which was later named Beaverton. The railroad tracks in the image belong to the Flint Pere Marquette Railroad, which connected Coleman to the Ross Mill.

Color postcard from 1938 of the Duluth, South Shore Atlantic Railroad Co. ore dock in Marquette, Michigan. This postcard is part of the Marquette Postcard Souvenir Booklet. The ore docks were used to load ships with iron ore directly from railroad cars, making the process much more efficient. The first ore dock in Marquette was built in 1857. In 1862, elevated ore docks were built to make loading easier.

Color postcard from 1920 of cargo ships entering and leaving the Soo Locks, looking west toward the International Railroad Bridge in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan. This postcard is from the souvenir postcard folder "Souvenir of Sault Sainte Marie "The Soo" Michigan." The Soo Locks, located on St. Marys River between the United States and Canada, provide ships safe passage around the rapids in the canal. The first locks in this canal were built in 1855, and have been improved upon ever since. The locks are the busiest, based on tonnage passing through, in the world.

Black and white postcard from approximately 1907 showing grindstones piled on a railroad car in Grindstone City, Michigan. The city was founded around the grindstone quarries, with its primary industry focused on this finest of abrasive stones. After World War I, carborundum replaced grindstone, destroying the industry of the town and the town itself. The city is alternatively spelled Grind Stone City.

Ontonagon County (Mich.)

Black and white photograph from souvenir folder of Big Rapids, published in approximately 1907, depicting the sawmill and lumber yards of Jones Green manufacturing. Jones Green manufactured building materials, from sashes, doors and blinds, to maple flooring, and was established in 1895. Judge W. T. Jones had previously operated a factory on the location producing building materials on a smaller scale until that factory burned down, prompting him to go into business with George W. Green. The factory - expanded in 1902 - operated its own sawmill for cutting lumber to be used in the plant, and received lumber directly from railcars.

This collection consists of architectural drawings of the Michigan Central Station in Detroit, Michigan. The architects of the station were Warren and Wetmore architectural firm in partnership with Reed and Stem. Not all of the drawings within the collection have been digitized.
