Black and white photo postcard from approximately 1954 depicting a circa 1890-1900 photograph of Bridge Street, looking north in Charlevoix, Michigan. The correspondence on the back of the postcard reads: "Dear Friends: This is the main stem of Charlevoix, looking north, in the gay but mudy 90's."

Lake Charlevoix can be seen in the background. Since the 1880s, Charlevoix has been a popular summer vacation spot. In the late Nineteenth to mid-Twentieth Centuries, Charlevoix was a popular stop for passenger liners and considered a top resort destination in the country.

The South Pier Light was moved to the south pier from the north pier in 1914. In 1948, the wood structure was replaced with the steel structure seen in this image. It was painted red until the early 1980s, when the structure was painted white and black.

Founded in 1881 by University of Chicago professors as the Chicago Club Summer Home Association, they soon built their club house on a prized piece of land on the Pine River (which flows into Round Lake). These types of resort clubs helped make Charlevoix a major summer resort town.

The Belvedere Club was one of several private summer resort clubs that were created by prominent Chicago businessmen in the late Nineteenth Century, which helped to propel Charlevoix into a major summer resort town. The Belvedere Club was one of the most exclusive of the clubs.
