Cheboygan County (Mich.)

Black and white postcard from approximately 1907 of the Cheboygan County Courthouse in Cheboygan, Michigan. Construction began on the large stone and red brick courthouse in 1898, and it was completed in February, 1900 and cost $35,000. The clock tower featured a "Century Tower Clock," manufactured by Nels Johnson in Manistee, Michigan, named such as they were meant to last a hundred years. In 1969, a new courthouse was built on a different site, and the 1898 courthouse was sold to a paper company. The company razed the building and turned the lot into a parking lot in 1970.

Black and white postcard from circa 1905-1908 depicting Main Street in Cheboygan, Michigan, looking northeast from Division Street. The building on the corner is the First National Bank building, and next to it the Gerow Block. The First National Bank building was constructed in 1883, and was destroyed by a disastrous fire in 1922, which also destroyed the Gerow Block and two other business blocks. A new bank building was put in its place, but in 1930 the bank was closed due to embezzelment and crooked book-keeping on the part of the receiving teller. A new bank was established in its place - Citizens National Bank - in 1931, and still occupies the location.

Black and white aerial photograph, taken in 1976 by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Land Resource Programs Division, of Cheboygan, Michigan, looking northeast. The river in the image is the Cheboygan River, flowing into Lake Huron. The bridge in the foreground is the Lincoln Avenue bridge, and the road to the left of the bridge is Main Street. The large facility on the west bank is the current Great Lakes Tissue Company paper processing plant. At the time of the photo, it was Procter Gamble's Charmin Division plant.

The large red brick building with the clock tower on the left is the Cheboygan County Courthouse, built 1898-1900. The building with the smokestack by the river is the Cheboygan Brewing and Malting Company, started in 1882 (originally named Northern Brewing Company) and brewing until 1911. The church in the center a few buildings up from the courthouse is the First Congregational Church, located at Main and Nelson Streets, built in 1901 and still standing. The old Cheboygan High School can be seen in the background, with its distinctive cupola in the center of the roof. This image shows one of the last log drives down the Cheboygan River. The lumber industry boomed in Cheboygan in the late 19th Century until about 1900, when it started its decline.
