First Lieutenant Sept 21, 1846. Brevet Captain Aug. 20, 1847, for gallant and meritorious conduct in the battle of Contreas and Churubusco, Mexico. Major Sept. 13, 1847, for gallant and meritorious conduct in the battle of Chapultepec, Mexico. Resigned Sept. 30. Was on duty at Fort Columbus, N.Y., Sept. 30, to Oct. 13, 1841. He joined his regiment Oct. 30, 1841, and served with it in Florida in campaign against Seminole Indians to April 5, 1843; en route to and at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., to April 27, 1844; on frontier duty at Camp Wilkins, La., to July 7, 1845; in the military occupation of Texas and in the war with Mexico to July 9, 1848, being engaged in the battles of Palo Alto, May, 8. Resaca de le Palma, May 9; Monterey, Sept. 21 to 23, 1846; seige of Vera Cruz, March 9 to 29; 1847; batttles of Cerro Gordo, April 17 and 18; Oka Lake, Aug. 16; Conturas, Aug. 19 and 20; Churubusco, Aug. 20; storming of Chapultepec, Sept. 13, and assault and capture of City of Mexico, Sept. 13, 1847. With regiment at Pascagoula, July to Oct. 17, 1848; near San Antonio, Texas, to June 1, 1849; on the march to and at Fort Bliss, Texas, to Oct. 14, 1850; on leave to Aug. 17, 1851; conducting recruits to Sept. 7, 1851; commanding company at Fort Filmore, N.M., to Jan., 1852; at Fort Webster, N.M., to Nov. 30, 1852; at Fort Filmore, N.M., to July 1, 1853; at Fort Webster, N.M., to Nov. 30, 1852; at Fort Filmore, N.M., to Juy 1, 1853; at Fort Webster, N.M., to Dec. 20, 1853; and at Fort Thorn, N.M., to Feb. 2, 1855; on leave to June 1855; conducting recruits to New Mexico to Sept. 22, 1855, and commanding company at Fort Filmore, N.M., to Sept. 30, 1855, when he resigned and removed with his father's family to Pontiac, Mich., where he resided until the beginning of the civil war in April, 1861, when he promptly offered his services to the state, and was at once commissioned Colonel and assigned to the organization of the Second Michigan Infantry, which he commanded until his promotion to Brigadier General. He was commissioned Colonel of Second Michigan Infantry, April 25, 1861. Mustered into U.S. service May 25, 1861. Brigadier General, Volunteers, May 17, 1861. Major General, Volunteers, July 4, 1862. In command of his regiment May 25 to July 2, 1861 and of a brigade to March 14, 1862; in the defences of Washington and in the Manassas Campaign, being engaged in the battles of Blackburn's Ford, Va., and Bull Run, Va.; commanding division in the Army of the Potomac to Sept. 17, 1862, and was engaged in the siege of Yorktown, April 5 to May 4, 1862; battles of Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Malvern Hill, Va., South Mountain, and Antietam, Md., 1862, when he was mortally wounded. Died of wounds Nov. 3, 1862. Buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Pontiac, Mich. (Descriptive Roll Second Michigan Volunteers).
