Scope and Content: The Michigan Army National Guard’s federal mission is to provide properly maintained and equipped units available for prompt mobilization for war, national emergency, or as otherwise needed. Their state mission is to provide trained and disciplined forces for domestic emergencies or as otherwise required by state law. The National Guard is a community-based force with many members working and serving where they live.

Biography or Historical Note: Created by the Executive Organization Act of 1965, Michigan's Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DVMA) was known as the Department of Military Affairs until 1997. It was comprised of the Michigan National Guard and the Michigan Volunteer Defense Force. The Department was headed by a Director that was appointed by the Governor. The Director’s role included advising the Governor and the Adjutant General on policies and services related to veterans.
