Notes

Biography or Historical Note: The U.S. Christian Commission, organized in 1863, was based in Philadelphia. It's purpose was to minister to the physical and spiritual needs of soldiers during the Civil War. Thus, Commission efforts centered on sanitation and health care for the sick soldiers, and religious instruction and counselling to the sick, wounded and dying. Delegates from all over the country participated, fifty-seven of them were from Michigan.
