Black and white photograph from circa 1891-1900 of the intersection of Woodward Avenue and State Street in Detroit, Michigan. The corner store, with the interesting cupola, is Sanders Confectionary, opened in 1875 at this location (although expanded in 1891).

Black and white reproduction of a print showing Fort Pontchartrain (which would eventually become Detroit) when the settlement was founded in 1701 by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. This image was reproduced in a 1947 calendar published for the Detroit Trust Company.

Color postcard from circa 1922-1930 of Woodward Avenue, looking south from Grand River Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. The J. L. Hudson Department Store (Hudson's) on the left eventually made up the entire block before being demolished in 1998. The Hudson's building was built in 1911 (designed by the architecture firm Smith, Hinchman Grylls) and "finished" (after many additions) in 1946. In the background on the right can be seen the First National Building, built in 1922 and designed by architect Albert Kahn.

In the foreground is the old Detroit City Hall, built in 1871 and demolished in 1961 (the area is now known as One Kennedy Square). Behind it is the Dime Building, built in 1912. On the right is the Majestic Building, built in 1896, and demolished in 1962. Both the Dime and the Majestic Buildings were built by Daniel H. Burnham.

Color postcard from circa 1928-1930 showing the view north up Washington Boulevard from Michigan Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. On the left is the Book Building and Tower. The Tower was added on in 1926 and designed by Louis Kamper. On the right is the Washington Boulevard Building (1923) and further down the Industrial Bank Building (1928). St. Aloysius Church can be seen just north of the Washington Boulevard Building. It was built in 1861 and replaced in 1930. The statue of General Alexander Macomb stands guard in the foreground.

The tall building behind Detroit City Hall (1871) is the Dime Building (1912 - Daniel Burnham). The red building on the left is the Hammond Building (1890 - Detroit's first skyscraper). In the forground is the Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument (erected 1888).

The image also contains ferries, which were used to shuttle passengers across the river to Canada and to island resorts/amusement parks such as Tashmoo Park and Bob-Lo Park.

The Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, erected in 1872 to commemorate Michigan soldiers' and sailors' who died in the Civil War, can be seen in the center. In the background is the old Wayne County Courthouse (now the Wayne County Building), built in 1897. The image itself is likely from before 1902, as the Pontchartrain Hotel was built in that year where the building on the right stands in this postcard.

It was demolished and replaced by a parking lot in 1978. In the foreground, in front of the Cadillac Square Building in the image is the Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, erected in 1872 in memory of fallen Michigan soldiers and sailors in the American Civil War. To the right, at the end of Cadillac Square is the old Wayne County Courthouse (now known as the Wayne County Building), which was built in 1902.

Howard Crane (who designed several theaters in Detroit). The tower next to it is the David Broderick Tower (also known as the Eaton Tower), built in 1928 and designed by Louis Kamper. To the right of it on the other side of Woodward Avenue is the David Whitney Building, built in 1915 by Daniel Burnham. Set back on the right on Washington Avenue is the Book Building Tower, designed by Louis Kamper and built in 1926.

Black and white copy print of a photograph from circa 1872-1882 of the Great Western Carriage, Harness Sleigh Depot in Detroit, Michigan. On the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Beaubien Street, the structure was built in 1846 as the First Congregational Churhc. It was sold to the First Christian Church in 1863, and again in 1871, this time to be used as a livery stable and carriage depot. The Great Western Carriage, Harness Sleigh Depot was owned by Alfonzo Rolfe from 1872-1882, after which it was listed as a livery stable.

Black and white postcard from approximately 1908 of the Old Spanish Bell in Palmer Park, Detroit, Michigan. Palmer Park was given to the city by Senator Thomas Palmer in 1895. The bell was cast in Spain and taken to Mexico, and was a gift to Senator Palmer.

The Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is prominent in the foreground; it was erected in 1872 to commemorate the fallen of the Civil War. In the background is the old Detroit City Hall, built in 1871. A sign advertising J. L. Hudson's is on the right, at the future location of the Majestic Building. Hudson's, which would continue to occupy a prominant place on Woodward Avenue until 2001, began in 1881.
