A special early 6-day elk season was held October 25-30, 1988. Successful permittees were drawn from the 1987 pool of 38,416 unsuccessful elk applicants on file. A total of 90 permits were issued - 70 for Zone L and 20 in Zone M. Licenses included 35 Hunter Choice (bull, cow, or calf) and 55 Antlerless (cow or calf). The regular early winter season was an a-day hunt held December 6-13, 1988. The 145 successful permittees were chosen by random drawing from a pool of 40,166 applicants. Seventy-two of the 90 elk licensees were successful for an 80% success rate. The legal harvest included 23 bulls, 39 cows, and 10 calves. Elk in Zone L (similar to regular season Zone D) were still more difficult to bag at this earlier date as evidenced by the 77% success rate. One hundred forty-three of the 145 permittees were successful for a 99% success rate. The legal harvest included 59 bulls, 80 cows, and 4 calves. One hunter opted to take a cow as his Hunter Choice permit.
