Biography or Historical Note: The Bureau of History was established in the Michigan Department of State in 1989. It included the Division of Archives and Historic Preservation and the Division of Museums, Archaeology and Publications. In 2001, these functions were transferred to the newly created Department of History, Arts and Libraries. From 1965-1989, the archives and museum operated under the Michigan Historical Commission within the Department of State and from 1913-1965, the Michigan Historical Commission operated as an independent entity.

System of arrangement: Records are arranged by type, then by date of transfer to the Archives of Michigan. Record series represented in this collection include archival collections. Individual files can be found at the record group level.

These records document the history of Michigan. Government records with historical value are transferred to the Archives of Michigan for permanent preservation and private papers with historical value may be donated to the Archives of Michigan for permanent preservation.
