Notes

Description: Richard D. Wende was born April 4, 1848 in Posen, Germany. He immigrated to the U.S., settling in New York where he enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1861 at the age of 12, though he gave his age as 16. He was a bugler in the Fifth Regiment United States Artillery, Battery B and when his three year duty ended, he re-enlisted and remained with the battery until after the end of the war, traveling to Fort Monroe, Virginia in October 1865. He served until June 1866 when he received an honorable discharge. In March 1867, after Wende had traveled back to Prussia to assist his mother, he got a job working as a clerk at Pardee & Co. in Hazelton, Pennsylvania. He then relocated to Wilkes Barre where he became a horse doctor before moving to Rogers City, Michigan. On December 11, 1872, Wende married Eliza Wilson Moore (1845-1918) at Monroe. He continued taking care of horses and working as a veterinary surgeon in Monroe until his death on December 2, 1895 of lung disease.
