Biography or Historical Note: The State Prison of Southern Michigan was the state's first prison facility, located in Jackson. It was established in Public Act 19 of 1838 and its name was formalized in Public Act 76 of 1935. The prison was operated by a number of boards and commissions before being transferred to the State Prison Commission in the State Welfare Department in 1921, then to the Department of Corrections in 1937. The facility closed in 2002.
