Scope and Content: Letter from Nelson Ainslie to his wife, Mary Ann, dated October 17, 1863 while encamped at Columbia, Tennessee. Ainslie writes with disgusts how one of their colonels shot and killed a solider in Company B for accidentally brushing up against him. He also notes how the weather has been and how they had recently been in Franklin, Tennessee, but were sent a telegraph warning them of an impending attack by rebel forces, so they moved back to Columbia.

Biography or Historical Note: Oakland County. Enlisted in company I, Fourteenth Infantry, Dec. 21, 1861, at Pontiac, for 3 years, age 37. Mustered Feb. 13, 1862. On duty with Sixteenth Illinois Infantry, March 19th, 1864. Discharged at expiration of term of service at Detroit, Mich., March 27, 1865. Died April 27, 1899. Buried at Charlevoix, Mich.
