Biography or Historical Note: Jerry Lawler, son of Cork and Ruth Lawler, was born in Clare, Iowa on August 2, 1943. He held degrees from Saint Matthews Academy and Drake University and also served in the U.S. Army. He worked for the Iowa Legislative Service Bureau before moving to Michigan in 1968. For the next thirty-eight years, he worked for the Michigan Legislature. For the Legislature, he held various non-partisan positions, including Director of the Legislative Council Facilities Agency. In 1989, he became Executive Director of the Michigan Capitol Committee. In this capacity, he oversaw the restoration of Michigan's capitol. The capitol was re-dedicated on November 19, 1992. Ultimately, the restoration garnered national acclaim, and the U.S. National Park Service designated the capitol a National Historic Landmark. Lawler himself was an avid history buff. As an historian, he specialized in early Lansing and Michigan history and in the life of John Lansing, after whom Lansing, Michigan is named. Jerry Lawler died on September 14, 2007. He was survived by his wife Connie, three stepchildren (Kim Dewey, Beth Sandborn and Dr. Michael Sandborn) and eight grandchildren.
