Black and white photograph from souvenir folder of Big Rapids, published in approximately 1907, depicting the home of Frederick E. Hood. Hood was partner in the manufacturing firm Hood Wright, which was established in 1895 and produced wood veneers and panels.

Black and white postcard from approximately 1907 depicting the Ross Bros. Mill, Electric Light Plant and Water Works in Beaverton, Michigan. The Ross Bros. Mill - a "sapless paving block mill", was established in 1890, and was located at the convergence of the Tobacco River and the Cedar River/ It was this mill that marked the founding of the town, which was later named Beaverton. The railroad tracks in the image belong to the Flint Pere Marquette Railroad, which connected Coleman to the Ross Mill.

Black and white photograph from souvenir folder of Big Rapids, published in approximately 1907, depicting the Ward Bros. flooring mill in Big Rapids, Michigan. Ward Bros. started out running a saw mill and dimension factory in 1895, and began manufacturing maple and beech flooring in 1902. The factory in the image was built in 1905. Ward Bros. also operated a saw mill and retail coal and lumber yarn.

Black and white photograph from souvenir folder of Big Rapids, published in approximately 1907, depicting the Ferris Institute building in Big Rapids, Michigan.The building, known later as "Old Main," was on the corner of Oak and Ives Streets. In 1894, Ferris Industrial School moved into the building, changing its name to Ferris Institute in 1898. Ferris Institute would later become what is now Ferris State University. The building was destroyed by fire in 1950.

John Hanchett invented a hand swage for band saws in 1889 and founded Hanchett Manufacturing, which still manufactures sawfiling machines and tools. The lumber boom in Big Rapids in the late 19th Century also meant a boom in the manufacturing and supplying of parts and equipment for mills in the area.

Black and white photograph from souvenir folder of Big Rapids, published in approximately 1907, depicting the sawmill and lumber yards of Jones Green manufacturing. Jones Green manufactured building materials, from sashes, doors and blinds, to maple flooring, and was established in 1895. Judge W. T. Jones had previously operated a factory on the location producing building materials on a smaller scale until that factory burned down, prompting him to go into business with George W. Green. The factory - expanded in 1902 - operated its own sawmill for cutting lumber to be used in the plant, and received lumber directly from railcars.

The block was built in 1880 by Ferdinand Fairman. Fairman's Drug Store, owned by George F. Fairman, who was also the manager and treasurer of the building at this time, occupied one of the stores, along with Stillwell's Bazaar.

The building began construction in 1885 by the president of the Mecosta County Savings Bank, Daniel F. Comstock, but halted when the bank failed in 1896. William P. Nisbett bought the building after retiring from newspaper publishing and completed the structure in 1906.

Nisbett was a prominent resident of Big Rapids in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. He owned and operated the Big Rapids Weekly Herald from 1882-1900, started the Evening Bulletin in 1888, and was postmaster of Big Rapids from 1895-1899.
