Notes

Biography or Historical Note: The Michigan State Highway Department was authorized in 1903 by Public Act 203 and officially established in 1905 by Public Act 146. The Department’s responsibilities included all of Michigan's highway systems (Michigan State Trunkline Highway System) and other forms of transportation, including airports, shipping, and railroads. The Executive Reorganization Act of 1965 changed the name to the Department of State Highways and established it as a principal department of the executive branch. The name changed to the Department of Transportation in 1978. Today, MDOT is headed by a Director that is appointed by the Governor.

The Michigan Department of Transportation's Design Division supports the development of transportation project documents and services in order to deliver contracts on time and within budget.

Complete Streets Advisory Council

The Complete Streets Advisory Council was created by Public Act 135 of 2010 to "provide education and advice to the state transportation commission, county road commissions, municipalities, interest groups, and the public on the development, implementation, and coordination of complete streets policy" that accounts for nonmotorized transportation. The council consisted of representatives from state agencies, county road commissions and community organizations.
