Biography or Historical Note: Russell Clark “R.C.” Leavenworth was born July 20, 1880 in Fife Like, Grand Traverse, Michigan to Eugene A. and Emma (Clark) Leavenworth. The family moved to Luther, Michigan where Eugene died in 1897. Leavenworth established a photography studio in a building he had erected at 306 Lake Street (now the home of Lake Street Market). The family lived in the back part. He built up a successful business with a gallery that was equipped with cameras and supplies for amateur photographers. He also developed their work on request and provided picture framing services, as he kept a stock of moldings in the shop.In the spring of 1920, Leavenworth sold his Boyne City studio to F.B. Finlay of Caro, Michigan and on May 10, 1920, the Leavenworths moved to Lansing. There, Leavenworth established a photography studio in the basement of his home on Michigan Avenue and began to specialize in industrial and general commercial photography. He also shot panoramic photographs with his Cirkut camera, a skill he had perfected while still in Boyne City. And, he served as the official photographer for the Lansing State Journal for many years. In 1923, Leavenworth’s future son-in-law Hiram Marple began to work with Leavenworth and in 1924, was brought into the business.
