Title: Archives of Michigan

Scope and Content: The Archives of Michigan is responsible for preserving the records of Michigan government and other public institutions. The collections also include documents, maps, photographs and film from private individuals and organizations.

Notes

Biography or Historical Note: The 1913 Michigan Historical Commission Act established the Archives of Michigan. The Archives operated as part of the Historical Commission until it moved to the Michigan Department of State with the Executive Reorganization Act of 1965. From 2001-2009, it was part of the Department of History, Arts and Libraries (HAL). When HAL was dissolved in 2009, the Archives moved to the Department of Natural Resources.

System of arrangement: Records are arranged by type, then by date of transfer to the Archives of Michigan. Record series represented in this collection include archival collections and audiovisual material. Individual files can be found at the Record Group level.

Archival Collections on Microfilm

These records document the history of Michigan and are preserved in microfilm format. Government records with historical value are transferred to the Archives of Michigan for permanent preservation and private papers with historical value may be donated to the Archives of Michigan for permanent preservation

Audiovisual Materials

This record series contains films, videotapes, digital videos and photos, filmstrips, audiotapes and slides. They may be created by agencies to document promotional activities, training, agency accomplishments, special events, initiatives, personnel and other activities of general interest.

Archival Collections
